Students Meet, Exceed Standards at 10 Cherokee County Schools

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA -- Ten Cherokee County schools were recently recognized by the Georgia Governor's Office of Student Achievement for meeting the office's high standards for public schools.

Awards were presented to the schools for reaching certain levels of the Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS), a mandate of the No Child Left Behind legislation.

Five of the Cherokee County schools earned the SSAS Bronze award for Highest Performance, while the remaining half earned the Gold award, also for Highest Performance.

The minimum requirements for Highest Performance revolved around a school's Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status and whether or not its student body meets and exceeds standards.

To win a Bronze award, over 20% of the school's students must exceed standards, and at least 95% must meet or exceed them. Gold award-winning schools must make AYP for at least two consecutive years, have over 30% of the students exceed standards, and have at least 97% of those standards met or exceeded.
