WEEKEND EVENTS: Glory in the Park, Atlanta Falcons and IMAX | Community Spirit
ATLANTA – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.
Bands, Brew and Boobie-Q will be held at SweetWater Brewing Company on Saturday. This event is being held to benefit the Team Zero to Sixty, who are raising money for the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Race for the Cure. The event starts at 7:00 and SweetWater is located at 195 Ottley Drive in Atlanta.
As a part of the Jazz on the Lawn series, Gwen Hughes will be performing her pop, jazz and bluegrass hits at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. This Atlanta based singer has performed in a number of cities from Paris to Prague. Her album is due out in early 2011. The concert will be held at 980 Briarcliff Road in Atlanta.
Alison Krauss and Union Station will be performing at the FOX Theatre on Saturday night. The two acts perform bluegrass and country. Krauss is a, pretty, accomplished fiddler and singer who signed her first record deal at 14 and has since released 12 albums. The concert starts at 8:00 on Saturday and will be held at 660 Peachtree Street in Atlanta.
KISS 104.1 will be hosting their annual Flashback Festival at Aarons Amphitheatre at Lakewood. The concert features acts like: Whodini, Loose Ends, Keith Sweat and Larry Graham. According to their website, “Flashback Festival 2011 is Atlanta’s biggest Old School R&B Concert starring legendary artists from back in the day”. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster. The Aarons Rents Amphitheatre at Lakewood is located at 2002 Lakewood Way in Atlanta.
The Grant Park Conservancy is hosting their free Movie in the Park on Friday at Grant Park. The movie will be screened in the Cyclorama. This week the featured movie in the park will be “Glory”. Glory is a 1989 movie “based on the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the nation’s first all-Black volunteer regiment”. The move begins when the sun sets. Grant Park is located at 800 Cherokee Avenue in Atlanta.
The Atlanta Falcons will be playing in their first pre-season matchup against the Miami Dolphins at the Georgia Dome. According to the Falcons, veteran players like White, Claybo, Ryan, Abraham and Lofton will be starting. And fans can plan on seeing some play action from rookie Julio Jones. The game will kick off at 7:30 at the Georgia Dome. The Dome is located at One Georgia Dome Drive in Atlanta.
Atlanta Braves fans will be able to watch the Braves go head to head against the Chicago Cubs and see an early evening Bobby Cox tribute and number retirement. On Saturday, the Braves will play their Legends Game featuring the 1991 Braves versus all other Braves alumni. The Braves will also hold their first annual Braves Bash, virtual fan meet and greet. The game will be held at Turner Field. The field is located at 755 Hank Aaron Drive in Atlanta.
Fernbank’s Martinis and IMAX will be held today at the museum. The event that is popular for twenty-something’s offers a relaxed bar scene and the option of watching an IMAX movie. The event is held every Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. The event is charged according to what each guest intends on doing for the evening. Check them out online, here.
Park 75 at the Four Season will be hosing the James Beard Celebrity Chef Tour. On Saturday, the tour features chefs like Richard Blias, Carla Hall and Geoffrey Blount. The chefs will be creating a full course meal with wine pairings. This charity event was designed for diners to look into the culinary world and get a true glimpse of the behind the scenes of the industry. Park 75 is located at 75 Fourteenth Street.
Be’la Fleck and the Flecktones will be performing at Chastain Park Amphitheater on Friday evening. Fleck is known as one of the premier banjo. Bela Fleck is considered one of the world’s best banjo players. Bruce Hornsby will open the concert; Hornsby is an American singer, pianist, accordion player and songwriter. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster. Chastain is located at 4469 Stella Drive in Atlanta.
