Happy Read Across America Day from Knox Elementary!

CANTON, GA -- Wednesday, Mar. 2 marks the 107th birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.

In his honor, the National Education Association (NEA) created Read Across America Day, an annual movement that encourages children to celebrate books and the power of storytelling.

The students at Knox Elementary School in Canton recognized Read Across America Day with plenty of fun activities, including a pajama party, guest readers and a visit from one of Dr. Seuss's most beloved characters: the Cat in the Hat.

Eat at Panda Express, Help Boys & Girls Club

CANTON, GA -- Who knew that eating Chinese food could do so much good?

On Friday, the Panda Express in Canton (1401 Riverstone Parkway, 30114) will give away free meals to benefit the Boys & Girls Club in Cherokee County.

Guests will receive a free 2-entrée plate and 22 oz. drink between 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. In return, they will be asked to donate to the Boys & Girls Club.

All funds raised through this event will go toward a security system for the club.

Panda Express in Canton is proud to partner with the Boys & Girls Club in Cherokee County in its effort to give back to the community it serves.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- The 2011 Cherokee County School District (CCSD) Science and Engineering Fair was held on Monday, Jan. 24 at Woodstock High School.

The following winners will represent the county in the Northwest Georgia Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, Feb.

ATLANTA -- The 119 Atlanta-area Chick-fil-A restaurants will host a special Daddy-Daughter Date Night on Saturday, Feb. 5.

Fathers and daughters will be encouraged to spend the evening together, enjoying time in the restaurant and participating in activities.

"One of Chick-fil-A's goals is to promote community connections and enrich the lives of everyone we come in contact with," said Robin Lomax, Chick-fil-A area marketing director. "We understand the importance of father-daughter relationships and want to encourage Atlanta community members to take a break from busy schedules, enjoy their loved ones' company over a meal and celebrate the significant relationship in their lives."

Each Chick-fil-A will celebrate in its own way.

Braves Caravan to Visit Creekland Middle School

CANTON, GA -- The Atlanta Braves Country Caravan is hitting the road and heading to Canton on Friday, Jan. 28.

Presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors, the Braves Caravan will make more than 30 stops in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee between Monday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 5. The Braves are using this two-week stretch to travel more than 3,000 miles and meet thousands of fans before beginning their Spring Training in Orlando.

Braves players Brian McCann, David Ross and Brandon Beachy, coach Roger McDowell, general manager Frank Wren and alumnus Dave Brundage will visit Creekland Middle School (1555 Owens Store Road, Canton, 30115) on Jan. 28 from 10:30 a.m.

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Winners

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA -- The Cherokee County School District held elementary, middle and high school level competitions of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl in January.

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is an event where teams are required to read selections from Georgia Book Awards lists prior to an academic bowl-style competition. It is open to students in grades four through 12.

The top two teams in each division advance to the North Georgia regional competition on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Pickens Middle School in Jasper.

Cherokee County's winning teams are:

First: Clayton Elementary, Canton
Second: Ball Ground Elementary

First: Freedom Middle, Canton
Second: Creekland Middle, Canton

First: Cherokee High, Canton
Second: Etowah High, Woodstock

ATLANTA -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. helped to change the world over four decades ago.

Now, Metro Atlantans can do their part to make a difference with the simple, selfless act of a blood donation.

Volunteer blood donors will have a chance to give at several local drives on Monday, Jan. 17:

* Gold's Gym (3362 Acworth Summit Boulevard, Acworth, 30101)
2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

* WellStar Cobb Hospital (3950 Austell Road, Austell, 30106)
9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

* Orange United Methodist Church (220 Orange Church Circle, Canton, 30115)
2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

* Johnson Ferry Baptist Church (955 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta, 30068)
1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

African-Americans are especially encouraged to give, as they have a higher percentage of donors with Type O and Type B blood, the two types that usually drop to critically low levels during a shortage.
