Cherokee seniors to be honored at bowl game

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Northside Hospital - Cherokee will sponsor a bowl game for seniors in the Cherokee County School District later this year.

The Northside Hospital - Cherokee CCSD Senior Bowl will be held Friday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Etowah High School stadium. It is the first football game of its kind to be held in Cherokee County.

Senior football players, cheerleaders, marching band members and JROTC cadets will be honored during the game. The players will also receive commemorative jerseys, while the cheerleaders, band members and cadets will get medals.

"We're about giving our students opportunities to succeed and celebrating the achievements," Cherokee County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo said in a statement. "This wonderful event does both."

Tickets for the bowl game are only $5. The admission fee will be waived for anyone who brings a new, unwrapped toy for the school district's holiday toy drive.

Sequoyah HS Equestrian Club going to nationals

CANTON, Ga. -- Three members of Sequoyah High School's Equestrian Club have qualified for a national tournament.

Ashley Bates, Caitlin Miles and Emma Pennell will represent the school at the Riders Interscholastic Federal North America Georgia State Finals this weekend. The tournament will be held at In Your Dreams Farm in Alpharetta.

Bates won two titles at last year's tournament.

This is only the second year Sequoyah High has offered an equestrian club.

56 Cherokee students earn National Signing Day scholarships

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Nearly 60 seniors at Cherokee County's six public high schools accepted sports scholarships on National Signing Day.

The scholar-athletes were recognized Wednesday during a special brunch at the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Conference Center in Canton.

Highlights from the event included twin brothers Austin and Avery Smith signing baseball scholarships for the same college, and the awarding of the county's very first bowling scholarship.

Sequoyah HS volleyball team gets runner-up at state

CANTON, Ga. -- Sequoyah High School's volleyball team was named runner-up at this year's AAAAA Volleyball State Championships.

The Lady Chiefs and their coaches -- John Edwards, Lori Little, Morgan Little, Stephen Pate and Hillary Turner -- will be recognized by the superintendent and school board for their amazing accomplishment.

Team members include McCall Allen, Ashlyn Brandon, Kelsey Goran, Kelley Hartman, Lauren Hartman, Kali Jones, Lane Lauletta, Kate Mann, Kayla Morris, Logan Page, Emily Ryan, Kyli Schmitt and Jensyn Wells.

High school coaches to participate in rib-eating contest

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Texas Roadhouse is kicking off a 10-day series of special events with a rib-eating contest for local high school coaches.

On Monday, Oct. 7, coaches from Cherokee, Harrison, Kell, Kennesaw Mountain, North Cobb, Pope and Sprayberry high schools will compete to see who can eat the most ribs.

The winning coach will receive 10 percent of the evening's proceeds for his football team.

The Battle of the Coaches contest will begin at 7:30 p.m. It will be preceded by an applesauce-eating contest for children at 6:30 p.m.
