Brittany Holt, who was riding the horse, told responding officials that the horse got stuck while trying to cross a trail. When the animal began thrashing, she started to sink.
Rescue crews from Cherokee County and the Milton Fire Department used a harness supported by a large frame to pull the horse from the hole, according to Cherokee County Fire spokesman Tim Cavender. Crews had to dig mud away from the horse to rescue her.
The horse emerged from the hole at around 9:40 p.m. and was taken to the University of Georgia Veterinary Hospital, where she was later put down.
