Plane makes emergency landing on I-575 in Canton

CANTON, Ga. – A small plane made an emergency landing on Interstate 575 in Canton Tuesday night.

The Beachcraft Sundowner landed on the northbound lanes, just north of Airport Road, around 7 p.m..

According to Tim Cavender of the Cherokee County Fire Department, a 38-year-old student pilot and a 53-year-old flight instructor were on board the plane.

The student pilot told 11Alive's Jon Shirek that he was from Nashville and was visiting Atlanta, where he used to live. He said he was taking a flight lesson, and he and the instructor had taken off from DeKalb-Peachtree Airport and flew to Cherokee County Airport. They were practicing taking off and landing. He said he was on his third landing when the engine began to lose power. They couldn't make it back to the runway. Cavender said the instructor took over the controls and safely landed the aircraft. Once he landed the plane, he pulled it off of the highway into grass to avoid traffic.

"We found a lucky gap" in the I-575 traffic, the student pilot said.

According to Cavender, a motorist who saw the plane approaching was able to slow down traffic to give the plane more room to land.

Both the student pilot and the instructor were unhurt, and the plane was undamaged.

The plane was towed back to the airport at about 10:30 p.m.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

The website faa.gov shows that the plane was manufactured in 1975, and its registered owner is Quality Aviation, Inc., of Atlanta.
