Cherokee County inmate dies

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- An inmate in the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center passed away over the weekend.

Demetrie Jones, 32, of Ellenwood died Saturday. He has been in custody since Dec. 10, when he was arrested for probation violation.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Lt. Jay Baker said Jones was under the care of the jail's medical unit at the time of his death. He had several medical conditions that required him to be kept in isolation. An autopsy completed Monday at 10 a.m. revealed he most likely died from complications of those medical conditions.

The GBI will investigate, as it does with every jail death.
