CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Four Cherokee County high school seniors have been named semifinalists for the prestigious National Achievement Scholarship.

The prize is given annually to some of the top black high school students in the country. Officials whittle down 1,600 semifinalists to 800 scholarship winners.

Cherokee County's semifinalists include Austin P. Floyd (Cherokee High), Langston H. Leake (Sequoyah High), Ebony N. Scott (Cherokee High) and Felicia N. Williams (River Ridge High).

To become a finalist, each student must fill out a detailed application, write an essay and receive an endorsement from his or her principal.
