CANTON, Ga. -- This year's Georgia Association of School Psychologists (GASP) School Psychologist of the Year is from Cherokee County.

Dr. John Poidevant is the psychologist for Canton's Avery and Macedonia elementary schools. He received his award on Oct. 1.

"(Poidevant) calmly guides the administration and staff through crises and provides direct support for students and families. He is viewed by parents and staff as professional, supportive and approachable," Charlette Green, the school district's director of special education, said in a statement. "Dr. Poidevant is a shining example of what a school psychologist should strive to do to support students, parents and school staff."

Poidevant earned his degree in school psychology from the University of Florida and has worked for Cherokee County since 2006.

He will be recognized during the Oct. 17 Cherokee County School Board meeting.
