CCSD transportation employees win state competition

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Cherokee County's special needs students who use the district's bus transportation are in very good hands.

Cherokee County School District transportation employees Dale Roberts and Rhonda Fiddler won first place in the sixth annual Georgia Special Needs School Bus Roadeo, which was held on Saturday, Feb. 5.

The team will now go on to compete in the National Roadeo on Friday, Mar. 11 in Kansas City.

The Roadeo is held to improve the training and preparedness of bus drivers who transport children with special needs. The driver and bus monitor work as a team as they compete in the areas of a bus pre-check, wheelchair loading and securing, special needs evacuation and driving.

In the special needs Roadeo, the drivers are also judged on their TLC -- their ability to maneuver the bus while taking care of fragile passengers.

Roberts and Fiddler took home the top prize for Georgia in 2009 as well.

Arthur's 'Little Sister' Visits Clayton Elementary

CANTON, GA -- Kim Brown, the younger sister of popular children's author Marc Brown, visited the second and third grade classes at Clayton Elementary School in Canton on Thursday, Feb. 17.

Marc Brown is best known for his Arthur books, a series about a loveable aardvark and all his animal friends.

At Clayton Elementary, Kim shared stories about her childhood and revealed that many of the characters in the Arthur books are based on real people from her family and neighborhood. Kim even admitted that Marc based Arthur's pesky little sister D.W. on her!

Needless to say, the students were thrilled to meet the "real" D.W. and hear about her adventures.
