Sequoyah High DECA Students Fare Well at Regionals

CANTON, GA -- A number of DECA students at Canton's Sequoyah High School recently competed in the 2011 Region I DECA Competition.

Beth Carey, a business education teacher and DECA advisor at Sequoyah, would like to congratulate all of her students for their hard work and effort:

Students who place 1st through 4th are eligible to compete at the state-level competition at the end of February.

Braves Caravan to Visit Creekland Middle School

Braves Caravan to Visit Creekland Middle School

CANTON, GA -- The Atlanta Braves Country Caravan is hitting the road and heading to Canton on Friday, Jan. 28.

Presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors, the Braves Caravan will make more than 30 stops in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee between Monday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 5. The Braves are using this two-week stretch to travel more than 3,000 miles and meet thousands of fans before beginning their Spring Training in Orlando.

Braves players Brian McCann, David Ross and Brandon Beachy, coach Roger McDowell, general manager Frank Wren and alumnus Dave Brundage will visit Creekland Middle School (1555 Owens Store Road, Canton, 30115) on Jan. 28 from 10:30 a.m.

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Winners

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA -- The Cherokee County School District held elementary, middle and high school level competitions of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl in January.

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is an event where teams are required to read selections from Georgia Book Awards lists prior to an academic bowl-style competition. It is open to students in grades four through 12.

The top two teams in each division advance to the North Georgia regional competition on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Pickens Middle School in Jasper.

Cherokee County's winning teams are:

First: Clayton Elementary, Canton
Second: Ball Ground Elementary

First: Freedom Middle, Canton
Second: Creekland Middle, Canton

First: Cherokee High, Canton
Second: Etowah High, Woodstock

Cherokee County Schools Experience a 'Renaissance'

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA -- The most recent version of the Cherokee County School District's "Renaissance in Education" publication is now available.

The booklet, which can be found on the school district's Web site, lists the many accomplishments that the CCSD has made over the past 11 years.

Sequoyah High Artists Compete for National Awards

CANTON, GA -- Two Sequoyah High School students were recently honored for their digital photography artwork by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, one of the most prestigious student competitions in the country.

Students who submit the best work at the state level of the contest are awarded one of three levels of recognition: Honorable Mention, Silver Key or Gold Key. Only a select few pieces of art and writing are honored.

Sequoyah High senior Anna Ristuccia earned three Gold Keys for her works Night, Submerge and Dogs on Couch. Emily Hershberger, a sophomore at Sequoyah, also received a Gold Key for her piece entitled Caterpillar.

Update: The Cherokee County School District is allowed to cancel up to four days of classes for inclement weather without requiring them to be rescheduled. As a result, only two days need to be made up; they have been scheduled for Mar. 17 and 18. The February break will not be affected.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA -- Cherokee County students have now missed five days of school because of the winter weather.

Schools will also be closed on Monday, Jan. 17 for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

As a result, the Cherokee County School District has decided upon some make-up days for later in the year. Unless the state providers a waiver allowing the days not to be rescheduled, two previously announced furlough days -- Thursday, Mar. 17 and Friday, Mar.

Creekview Wrestlers Place Second in Region Competition

Creekview Wrestlers Place Second in Region Competition

CANTON, GA -- Creekview High School's varsity wrestling team placed second in the Region 7AAAA Dual Tournament over the weekend.

The Grizzlies easily defeated Lambert High and Rome High before the Finals, where they fell to Woodland High.

The runner-up trophy means that Creekview is now qualified to participate in the Georgia State Dual Meet Championship, which will be held in Macon on Friday, Jan. 14 and Saturday, Jan. 15. This is the first time in the team's five-year history that its wrestlers have qualified for the state championship.
