Sequoyah High ROTC Cadets Honor Veterans

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA -- The Sequoyah High School Air Force Junior ROTC cadets recently participated in two special events that honored veterans in Cherokee County.

Five cadets attended a breakfast for local veterans at Woodstock's Johnson Elementary School, where they also raised the Colors in a special ceremony.

Creekview High Math Team Adds Up Another Victory

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA -- The Creekview High School Varsity Math Team, coached by Henry Oglesby, won the Cherokee County Math Tournament held at Reinhardt University on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Creekview seniors Zach Youngblood and William Burke also placed first and second, respectively, as individuals.

This win over second-place Etowah High School qualifies Creekview's Math Team for the state competition for the third year in a row.

Sequoyah High Students Named to All-Star Cast

CANTON, GA -- Two Sequoyah High School students -- senior Elizabeth Mitchell and sophomore Nicholas Stinson -- were named to the Region 7AAAA One Act Play "All-Star Cast" on Saturday, Nov. 6.

This year's Region One Act was held at Creekview High School in Canton.

Sequoyah's production of "Do Not Go Gentle" placed third in the competition. It also received the "Best Set" award, which the school has won for the past five consecutive years.

Sequoyah was the only school in Cherokee County to place in the competition. It has landed in the top three at the Region One Act competition for the past 20 years.

Public Invited to Share Thoughts on Georgia Public Education

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- Everyone who is interested in learning more about public education in Georgia, or in making suggestions that may help Georgia lead the nation in improving student achievement, now has the opportunity to speak directly with a Board of Education member.

On Monday, Nov. 29, Robert "Buzz" Law of the Sixth Congressional District will lead an open public hearing at Autrey Mill Middle School (4110 Old Alabama Road, Johns Creek, 30022) from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Teachers, parents, students and concerned citizens are invited to take part in this important event. Those wishing to speak at the meeting are asked to sign in when they arrive.

Kids Collect Candy for Troops

CANTON, GA -- The Avery Elementary School PTA sponsored a post-Halloween "Cubs Candy for Troops" collection drive on Veterans Day.

Avery students collected their excess trick-or-treat candy and other sweet donations to send to the men and women of the United States Armed Services.

Popular Author to Speak at Cherokee High School

CANTON, GA -- Cherokee High School (930 Marietta Highway, Canton, 30114) and the CHS Book Club are proud to welcome author Simone Elkeles on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

Elkeles is the author of Perfect Chemistry, Rules of Attraction, Leaving Paradise, Return to Paradise and many others. She will speak to CHS students during the day; parents and community members are welcome to attend a second session from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Perfect Chemistry appeared on the American Library Association's 2010 list of Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers. The series has also been featured by the CHS Book Club. Books will be available for purchase and signing during Elkeles' visit.

Cherokee County Dominates FalCan Food Drive School Challenge

WOODSTOCK, GA -- Three Cherokee County schools have taken the top spots in this year's FalCan Food Drive School Challenge.

Each year, the Atlanta Falcons partner with Publix and the Atlanta Community Food Bank to host the FalCan Food Drive. This year, they also offered schools throughout Georgia the opportunity to join the fight against hunger.

A total of 40 schools participated by collecting canned food and non-perishable items between Oct. 4 and Oct. 18 for the chance to win exciting Falcons prizes. All participating schools received a special group ticket offer to the Sunday, Nov. 7 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Atlanta Falcons are pleased to announce that the 2010 FalCan Food Drive School Challenge collected 41,628 pounds of canned goods and non-perishable food items.

Liberty Elementary School in Canton came in third, collecting 2,852 pounds of food.
