Woodstock High Instructor Named Athletic Director of the Year

WOODSTOCK, GA -- Chuck Wilson, the athletic director at Woodstock High School, has been selected as the Region 5-AAAAA Athletic Director of the Year.

High school principals throughout the region voted for Wilson to receive the honor. He will compete against all the other regional winners this spring for the chance to become State Athletic Director of the Year.

"Coach Wilson's passion for high school athletics is apparent in each position he has held during his 22 years as an educator in Cherokee County," said Woodstock High principal Bill Sebring.

Wilson began his teaching and coaching career in 1989 at Etowah High School in Woodstock, where he coached football, tennis, baseball and basketball. In 1992, he transferred to Sequoyah High in Canton to serve as an assistant football coach, as well as assistant girls' soccer coach.

When Woodstock High opened in 1996, Wilson became the varsity girls' soccer coach, a position he held for six years.

Braves Caravan to Visit Creekland Middle School

CANTON, GA -- The Atlanta Braves Country Caravan is hitting the road and heading to Canton on Friday, Jan. 28.

Presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors, the Braves Caravan will make more than 30 stops in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee between Monday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 5. The Braves are using this two-week stretch to travel more than 3,000 miles and meet thousands of fans before beginning their Spring Training in Orlando.

Braves players Brian McCann, David Ross and Brandon Beachy, coach Roger McDowell, general manager Frank Wren and alumnus Dave Brundage will visit Creekland Middle School (1555 Owens Store Road, Canton, 30115) on Jan. 28 from 10:30 a.m.

Creekview Wrestlers Place Second in Region Competition

CANTON, GA -- Creekview High School's varsity wrestling team placed second in the Region 7AAAA Dual Tournament over the weekend.

The Grizzlies easily defeated Lambert High and Rome High before the Finals, where they fell to Woodland High.

The runner-up trophy means that Creekview is now qualified to participate in the Georgia State Dual Meet Championship, which will be held in Macon on Friday, Jan. 14 and Saturday, Jan. 15. This is the first time in the team's five-year history that its wrestlers have qualified for the state championship.

Atlanta Hawks Announce Essay Contest

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks have announced that entries are now being accepted for the "Why Bully Free is the Way to Be" Essay Contest.

The contest is part of the NBA's Read to Achieve program, sponsored by Philips.

One grand prize winner will be picked up by a limousine for a ride to school with Hawks center Al Horford, who will visit the student's classroom. The winner will also receive additional prizes, including four tickets to the Hawks' Read to Achieve Night game against the New York Knicks on Sunday, March 6, with a 6:00 p.m. tipoff.

Five runners-up will each receive four tickets to the March 6 game.

The contest is open to all Atlanta-area elementary school students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

'Fun in the Park' Photo Contest Winners Announced

COBB COUNTY, GA -- The "Fun in the Park" Photo Contest, hosted by the Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, is over for 2010.

This year marked the largest turn-out in the contest's history. Over 280 photos, all of which were taken in Cobb parks, were submitted in the three categories.

With so many great photos submitted, the panel of eight judges had a difficult time selecting the winners.

Cherokee County Dominates FalCan Food Drive School Challenge

WOODSTOCK, GA -- Three Cherokee County schools have taken the top spots in this year's FalCan Food Drive School Challenge.

Each year, the Atlanta Falcons partner with Publix and the Atlanta Community Food Bank to host the FalCan Food Drive. This year, they also offered schools throughout Georgia the opportunity to join the fight against hunger.

A total of 40 schools participated by collecting canned food and non-perishable items between Oct. 4 and Oct. 18 for the chance to win exciting Falcons prizes. All participating schools received a special group ticket offer to the Sunday, Nov. 7 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Atlanta Falcons are pleased to announce that the 2010 FalCan Food Drive School Challenge collected 41,628 pounds of canned goods and non-perishable food items.

Liberty Elementary School in Canton came in third, collecting 2,852 pounds of food.
